Nutritional Counseling

The education classes provided at Henderson and Walton Women’s Center, P.C. (HWWC) are conducted by a Registered Dietitian/Certified Diabetes Educator (RD/CDE).

Due to space limitations and out of courtesy to others, we respectfully ask that only the patient attend the education classes offered at HWWC. Most classes last for an extended period of time and some young visitors may become restless. Thank you for your cooperation.

Education Class Schedule

Monday

10:00 a.m. – Diabetes Education Class

Tuesday

10:00 a.m. – Glucose Intolerance Education Class (this may include any of the following diagnoses: pre-diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome or hypoglycemia)

Wednesday

10:00 a.m. – Gestational Diabetes Education Class

Thursday

10:00 a.m. – Cholesterol Education Class

Most insurance companies provide diabetes education as a benefit with no co-pay. Please contact your insurance company for all other education benefits. Please note that payment will be due at the time of your nutrition visit.

Individual consultations with the RD/CDE are available upon request.

Class Descriptions:

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Education Class (2 sessions)

  • The initial and follow-up education sessions are provided within 2 weeks.
    • Session 1 is a group class. During this session, the RD/CDE will provide instructions on survival skills (self-monitoring blood glucose and carbohydrate counting/using the Exchange Lists).
    • Session 2 and other follow-up visits are individual, face-to-face consults. During session 2, the RD/CDE will provide additional information on diabetes self-management skills.
  • The diabetes education sessions will address the following topics:
    • An overview of the diabetes disease process
    • Interpretation and discussion of lab results and how these results relate to the risk of possible diabetes complications
    • Discussion of any oral medication(s), ordered by the physician, and their role in the treatment of diabetes
    • Instruction on the use of a blood glucose meter along with instruction on self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) testing times and goals
    • Instruction on a healthy diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting and cholesterol-lowering principles (sample meal patterns provided)
    • Discussion of exercise goals (MD approved) and the relationship of exercise to cholesterol, blood glucose and weight
    • Discussion of diabetes complications as well as self-management skills to help promote wellness and lower the risk of these complications

Glucose Intolerance Class - Pre-diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or

Hypoglycemia (1 session)

  • An overview of the disease process
  • Interpretation and discussion of lab results
  • Discussion of any oral medication(s), ordered by the physician, and their role in the treatment of glucose intolerance
  • Discussion of follow-up lab testing
  • Instruction on a healthy diet to achieve and maintain optimal control of blood glucose and cholesterol along with a healthy body weight
  • Instruction on cholesterol-lowering principles to lower the risk for heart disease
  • Discussion of exercise recommendations (physician approved)

Gestational Diabetes Class (1 session)

  • An overview of the gestational diabetes disease process
  • Discussion of possible complications for both the fetus and mother
  • Instruction on the prenatal diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting (sample prenatal meal and snack patterns provided)
  • Instruction on the use of a blood glucose meter along with instruction on self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) testing times and goals
  • Follow-up:
    • SMBG results from the blood glucose meter will be read at each prenatal visit
    • Instruction on insulin therapy, if ordered by the physician

Cholesterol Education Class (1 session)

  • Interpretation of lab results as they relate to risk factors for heart disease
  • Instruction on a healthy diet including label reading for saturated and trans fat
  • Weight control recommendations
  • Discussion of exercise recommendations (physician approved)
  • Discussion of follow-up lab testing
